1 What is the function of the mitochondrion?
Answer: It is the site of aerobic respiration, where glucose and oxygen are converted into carbon dioxide, water and usable energy in the form of ATP.
2 A plant is kept in a dark cupboard but watered every day. Explain why it stops growing after a few weeks.
Answer: Without light it cannot photosynthesise, so it cannot produce glucose. It survives on stored food reserves until they run out, then growth stops.
3 Two brown-eyed parents, both heterozygous (Bb), have a child. Calculate the probability the child has blue eyes.
Answer: 25 percent. A Punnett square gives BB, Bb, Bb and bb, and only the bb combination, one of the four, produces blue eyes because the allele is recessive.
4 Describe one difference between a producer and a consumer in a food chain.
Answer: A producer, such as a plant, makes its own organic compounds through photosynthesis, while a consumer has to obtain them by eating other organisms.
5 State one function of the ribosome.
Answer: It is the site of protein synthesis, where amino acids are joined together in the order carried by messenger RNA.

Tips for studying this subject

Practise explaining, not just naming

Biology exams reward students who can apply a process to a scenario they haven't seen before. Generate short-answer questions and write a full explanation before you check the answer.

Sketch the process first

For photosynthesis, the circulatory system or meiosis, draw the process out before you answer. A written answer can hide a gap that a diagram makes obvious.

Learn a term by using it

Words like osmosis or allele stick once you've used them in a full sentence rather than memorised from a list. The explanation behind each question gives you that sentence for free.

Test twice, days apart

One test a few days before the exam and a shorter follow-up the night before, built only from what you got wrong, beats one long session of rereading.

Notice the command word

Explain wants a mechanism, describe wants a sequence of events, state wants a short fact with no reasoning attached. Reading the command word first tells you how much to write.
